Time To Say Goodbye – Raw

The end of the party, the last song on the album.

An awful lot of fun to record, and the best conclusion I could think of to a dark, emotional album.

Thanks for listening.

Life After Dark – Raw

Awake after dark, contemplating your life, anticipating your murder. Begging for life, for another day.
Cheery stuff to open the album.

This one is mostly done but needs a couple subtle changes before it’s ready for the album.

No Mans Land – Raw

War.
The pause between breaths, the space between shots, the land between front lines. The quiet between fighting. The gap between your life and your death.
The exceedingly profound and simple beauty of ordinary things, when they’re the last things you may see.

This is the midpoint of the album. I wrote it about the second World War, but it of course applies to any conflict, even those between lovers.

Work – Raw

Working.
Slavery.
The quiet rebellion of your spirit as you sit in traffic or on a stopped train, on your way to a job you hate.
The entire bloody system of enforced servitude for less while the rich get ever richer.
The murder of the planet corresponding to the murder of your soul.
This song is a scream against all of it.

This one is still pretty raw and I’ll change the percussion a bit for the final version. But this is the general idea.

Leave – Raw

Another sad, somber song. This one is about Leaving.

You might be in the wrong relationship, or you may be watching your parents split up. You could be leaving from yourself, in the sense of betraying your nature. Or you could simply be changing, maybe even for the better. Or it might be a political idea, the way reality differs from a political promise.

My wife says this is her favorite song on this new album, and I’m not really sure if that’s a good thing.

Time Is Running Out – Raw

Sad, quiet, and beautiful.

Your day is ending, your love is over, and you’re already pretty much dead. Might as well accept it. Or not. Doesn’t actually matter either way.

Well, enjoy!

I’m releasing a third album, if “releasing” is the right term for pressing as many discs as I can afford and then inflicting them on strangers.

This song was incredibly fun to record, mostly because it makes use of the Drunken Choir #2 – a group of people who apparently had nothing better to do than come to my house, in costume, drink what I gave them, and holler into the mics.

The album will be called Quarter Life Crisis and I’ll put up all seven songs in the next two weeks. These tracks are still unmastered, which means that the final versions will sound even better.

I hope you enjoy!

Quarter Life Crisis: Leaving

Another song from the upcoming album. Somber, dark, and frightening.

The songs from this album are really in quite a new direction for me. I’m trying consciously to pare down the sound, to make things rawer, plainer, less sterile, more homemade. That goes for the songs themselves – I’m trying to trim down the chord changes, middle sections, and extra parts. It’s pretty tough. There’s a strong tendency to hide behind lots of notes and chords, from the songwriting point of view, or behind layers and layers of sound, from the recording end.

I want this album to be stark, plain, bare, honest, cold, sad, and beautiful. The image in my head is of bare trees in late February, in the precious hours of cold, limp sunlight in Leningrad.

What about the ending to this song?

So I’ve got a new album in the works: 7 songs, drawn together by a thematic concept which is so multi-layered and meaningful on parallel levels that it just makes me shiver to think about it.

I’m going to work on these in public, releasing demos and works-in-progress, warts and all. I want the whole album to be as raw and organic as possible, so some of the mistakes that I make will no doubt end up in the final cut, just because the energy or feel is right.

I want to wage war on sterility.

I’m also trying to break out of the isolation of my own head, and so I’m opening this whole experiment with a question to you. Please help me by listening to both versions of the song, above, and marking your favorite in the poll, below.

The song is called “Learning” and I can’t figure out which of these versions is the better take for this song. The difference is in the wailing, shrieking guitar. Version 1 has only one guitar (except at the chorus, where a second line comes in), while Version 2 has a wall of guitars wailing all over the place. I don’t know which one I like better, so I’m asking for your help. And thanks.

Which version of "Learning" do you like best?
